The New Chanel Mini Shopping Bag also known as the Chanel Kelly Bag, has recently reappeared in Chanel’s Fall / Winter 23/24 runway show and has reached a fever pitch with fashion enthusiasts everywhere clamoring to get their hands on one.
We say reappeared because as many know, this is not a new bag structure from Chanel. It was initially created in the 80’s as Chanel’s interpretation of the highly coveted Hermes Kelly hence the nickname.
The differences between the Chanel Kelly 80’s and 2023 design
The initial bag structure of the Chanel Kelly has stayed the same but there are differences in the design between the 80’s version and the one we have today.
The 2023 mini shopping bag is quilted leather unlike the smooth leather version presented in the 80’s. The present version has a longer chain strap, for the bag to be worn cross-body as well, whereas the 80s version only had a handle to be carried by hand. Unlike the 80’s 24k gold plated closure, the 2023 version which entails a light gold metal.
The changes to the Chanel Kelly have made it a lot more functional and versatile for those of us who need more competence in our bags today.
